On 13 December, the "2022 Global Sustainable Fisheries Development Forum - Aquaculture Trade Value Chain Innovation Summit Forum and The 5th International Forum on Aquaculture in Silk Road Countries" was successfully held online. About 150,000 participants from relevant government departments, universities, international organisations, research institutes, associations and enterprises attended the forum. Ma Hongtao, Director of the Agricultural Trade Promotion Centre, Jin Xiansi, Director of the Yellow Sea Fisheries Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Fisheries Sciences, Chen Songlin, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Peter Redmayne, President of Ocean Expo USA, and Jie Huang, Director General of the Network of Aquaculture Centres in Asia Pacific (NACA), delivered speeches at the opening ceremony of the Forum.

Ma Hongtao pointed out that fishery products are an important supplement to ensure world food security and can provide more high-quality protein for global consumers. China is one of the most open markets for global fisheries, and an important engine for the prosperous development of global fish trade. At present, the world economic recovery is facing various challenges, and the sustainable development of global fisheries and global food security are facing unprecedented challenges. She hoped that the participants would share their valuable experience and wisdom through in-depth exchanges and mutual inspiration, and contribute innovative ideas and solutions to enhance the level of innovation in the aquatic trade value chain and the sustainable development of global fisheries. Jin Xianshi pointed out that fisheries are an important part of the agricultural and marine economy, and the healthy development of fisheries is of great significance in effectively safeguarding the supply of aquatic products, increasing the income of fishermen and promoting the economic development of fisheries. I hope that participants can share their experiences and practices, seek innovative development and jointly promote the sustainable development of global fisheries. Academician Chen Songlin said that science and technology is the first productive force and only when science and technology are strong can the industry be strong. As fishery science and technology workers, we should be bold and remember our mission, strengthen original basic research, break through cutting-edge core technologies, and make greater contributions to the sustainable development of China's and the world's fisheries.


  Peter Redmayne said that since the New Crown Pneumonia epidemic, the global seafood market has faced risks and challenges from inflation and the slowdown of the global economy, and hoped that all parties could actively respond and work together. Jie Huang said that NACA has created a platform for cooperation and exchange by connecting governments, institutions, organisations and associations, and looked forward to more cooperation to promote the sustainable development of fisheries.


   The forum discussed in depth issues such as advanced technology concepts in aquaculture, high-quality development of aquaculture trade and innovation in the aquaculture value chain, aiming to provide strong support to promote sustainable development of global fisheries and maintain global food security. Professor Rokhmin Dahuri, President of the Indonesian Aquaculture Association, and Liu Yingjie, Vice President and Researcher of the Chinese Academy of Fisheries Sciences, presented on the role of sustainable aquaculture in the blue economy and scientific and technological advances in deep blue fisheries, respectively. Simon Funge-Smith, Senior Fisheries Officer, FAO Asia Pacific, and Jie Huang, Director General of NACA, analysed how to promote the transformation and upgrading of aquaculture from the perspective of investment and the aquaculture community concept, respectively. Focusing on "Aquatic germplasm resources", Shao Changwei and Zhang Xiaowen, researchers from the Yellow Sea Fisheries Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Fisheries Sciences, introduced the development of China's aquatic seed industry and economic brown algae germplasm farming respectively. Professors Mao Xiangzhao and Lu Kun from the Ocean University of China presented the current status of China's aquatic products development in terms of processing and trade. The forum also invited Dr Niall Broekhuizen from the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research, New Zealand, Syed Mahmudul Huq, President of the Bangladesh Shrimp and Fish Foundation and Professor Qin Jianguang from Flinders University, Australia to present an overview of current aquaculture development in New Zealand, Bangladesh and Australia respectively, and Professor Najiah Musa from Universiti Malaysia Terengganu to present on aquatic ecosystems The impact of microbial pollution on the sustainable development of fisheries. Dong Shaoguang, Deputy General Manager of Qingdao Guoxin Group, and Xu Bin, Technical Director of Guangdong Haixingnong Group Co., Ltd, presented aquaculture models and aquatic seed industry innovations as company representatives.


   The Global Fisheries Sustainability Forum is one of the supporting events of the China International Fisheries Expo (CIFEX). Organised by the Agricultural Trade Promotion Centre of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs (CCPIT Agricultural Industry Sub-Council), the Fair has been successfully held for 25 sessions since 1996 and is one of the world's leading fishery exhibitions in terms of scale, number of participants and international influence. The 26th Fishery Expo, originally scheduled to be held this year, will be postponed to 25-27 October 2023 at the Qingdao Hongdao International Convention and Exhibition Centre.
