Us media say us companies have launched another wave of layoffs and warned of more to come as executives say they will have to deal with a prolonged recession brought on by the coronavirus. In the past week, general electric co., Uber technologies inc. and airbnb inc. said they would lay off thousands of workers. MGM hotels international has warned that some of its 63,000 employees could be laid off permanently starting in August. In the past week, aviation supplier Raytheon co., glassdoor inc., a website that posts job openings, and united airlines inc. have said they plan to cut or have done so."Our airline -- and our entire workforce -- will have to be smaller than it is today," Kate gable, united's executive vice President of human resources, wrote in a recent memo to employees. The memo referred to the company's plans to cut its executive and administrative staff by at least 30 percent, possibly beginning in October. Other airlines are also expected to cut staff as demand for air travel remains historically low.Novel coronavirus has hit some of ge's strongest business units hard, chief executive officer larry culp said in late April, referring to the company's first-quarter results. Orders for the aerospace business, which makes engines for Boeing Co. and airbus co., fell 14 percent. On May 4, the company said it would cut about 13, 000 jobs in its jet engine business."We are facing a lot of headwinds in aviation, probably for some time," he said. We hope not, but that's not the reality we face."Other companies in the aviation sector are also feeling the effects. Raytheon, which makes everything from jet engines to missile systems, plans to cut spending by $2 billion."We are temporarily laying off many employees in our offices and across our business," Raytheon chief executive Greg hayes said Thursday. I think we're going to cut more jobs.""Employers as a whole have significantly reduced hiring activity and it is unclear when it will resume," Christian sutherland-huang, chief executive of glassdoor, a website that publishes job information and company ratings, said in a memo to staff on Friday. The SAN francisco-based company said glass door will lay off 30 percent of its workforce, or 300 people, including many who sell ads to smaller businesses.Mohawk industries inc., a maker of carpets and other flooring products, is also laying off workers and on a temporary basis because of plummeting demand, executives said Friday. "The coronavirus has dramatically changed our short-term strategy as we adapt to a rapidly changing landscape," said CEO Jeffrey loberbaum. They are also laying off workers as other executives speed up adjustments to plans made before the novel coronavirus pandemic. Nordstrom said Friday it will permanently close 16 stores, in part to better focus on meeting consumers' expectations for digital shopping. Novel coronavirus raises the importance of that effort, said Eric nordstrom, the company's chief executive.修"
